If you're planning to hire a car in Oz, ask rental companies about returning cars to their original destination. We 'returned' a luxury Mercedes campervan from Adelaide to Melbourne and paid just $1 per day for the privilege - you're normally given a time and mileage limit, but the three days we had was enough to fit in a detour to the Grampians plus a drive along Victoria's scenic Great Ocean Road.
