World's Most Romantic City

What in your opinion is the most romantic city/town in the world? Just curious to see how many people would pick the obvious Paris...

I think it really depends who you're with! Paris is undoubtedly a very romantic city but both Valencia and Barcelona are equally as romantic. I think a lot can be said for Berlin with its wide tree-lined avenues, numerous lakes, amazing museums and art galleries although probably not the most obvious choice.

I've never (yet!) been to Paris but I thought Bruges at Christmas was gorgeous - canals, beautiful Flemish architecture, christmas lights and belgian chocolate. Just a shame I was there without my husband...!

I know it's another cliché, but Venice has to be the most romantic city for me. There's nothing like being out in the evening in Venice, standing on an iron bridge over a narrow canal, when you suddenly hear singing and see a candlelit gondola passing by underneath. Pure magic.

I would say Venice as well, but looking away from the obvious'

Luang Prabang - Laos (sunsets over the Mekong in the world's most tranquil city) Cartegena - Colombia (Spanish colonial colour meets Carribean heat) Hoi An - Vietnam (for the night lanterns!) Salzburg - Austria (chocolate and castles)

Ah... ROmantic Cities, as much as I love a city, I find getting out in the country more romantic, or on a beach. Walking the South Downs, taking in the views, on a warm autumnal day, picnic at hand...

But cities, a mate of mine got engaged in Rome. Another in New York top of Empire State building. The mate who got engaged in Rome did so on a bridge, which is supposed to be for lovers, where you attach a padlock to the bridge which seals your love forever. This is where said mate proposed, with ring and engraved padlock in hand and the padlock is still there. So for a place for a romantic gesture, Rome. Judging by the answers here as well, looks like Italy is for romantics. Romance, Rome... wonder where the word comes from?

Gareth Sear - not very romantic.

I would have to say Prague.

We stayed here:-

in the Redwood apartment in March 2006. As it was low season we got the whole place for £50 a night, might even have been less. It was in a great area and we loved the walk in the mornings over the Charles Bridge into the square for breakfast. We had 2 perfect sunny days and then a big dump of snow and 2 beautifully crisp snowy days which completely transformed the city. Prague was easy to walk around, loads to do and easy to take a train out for the day to Karlstein Castle.

Castle Steps used to do airport pick-up and drop-off. A bit extravagant but it was a romantic break so worth the splurge!
