Try Aegina if you're just going for a week, it's only a couple of hours out of Piraeus on the ferry and is extremely friendly. It's also close enough if you fancy a day trip to Athens or dolphin-watching on the way to the nearby island of Poros.
I highly recommend Naxos for its stunning and incredibly long beach at Agia Ana. Stay at Maragas Camping for great atmosphere and friendly people. The ferry leaves Piraeus in Athens and Naxos is the second stop after Paros.
Or if you'd like to party, try Ios, though it does get pretty rowdy.
Best of all, just spend a few days on various islands and just see where you end up. There's loads to choose from and ferry connections are excellent.
Hi there,
I stayed on the island of Zante and you can see Kefalonia, companies run excursions to Kefalonia or you can try doing it yourself via the ferry.
You could also try Paros, you should be able to get to Naxos and Anti-Paros from there. Try http://www.greekferries.gr/
Buying a book like Greek Island Hopping could help: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_b/203-8791819-0642307?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=greece+island+hopping
Hope this helps.
I guess you've been and done, but I would definatly recommend Santorini - does this fit in with romantic places in another prt of the forum? I satyed in Oia, overlooking the caldera, taking in sunsets and beer. Wonderful. But as the person said earlier, Naxas is fab with lots of walking to be done. September may still be a little warm though. Where did you end up going?

I would say any of the islands that run down from Athens to Crete - great to island hop around.
Haven't stayed on Santorini - any idea of a good place to say, previous research showed that even seemingly decent places got slated on other places like Lonely Planet of TripAdvisor?
If anyone slates Kefalonia don't listen, just go there, and while there's still not too much development. More beaches - each one different - than anywhere I've ever been; Corfu OK; Mykonos vastly overrated - in my opinion.
i would recommend paros island, after backpacking through the greek islands a few times this would be my favourite and its little sister island andiparos. Easy to get to and to get around as well and a 30 min ferry journey to andi paros.
I went to the island of Samos in October last year for a week. It was wonderfully laid lack - end of season, few tourists, wonderful walking - a great place to chill out. We flew from Athens (1 hour) but there are boats. Would really recommend it.
